What Happens During a DOT Physical?

The physical covers a handful of tests including:

Vision - Drivers must have at least 20/40 vision in each eye, with or without correctional glasses or contacts. The vision test also includes distance, color, and horizontal field of vision.
Hearing - Drivers must be able to hear a "forced whisper" at 5ft or less, with or without a hearing aid device.
Blood Pressure/Pulse - This test is performed to catch high blood pressure and irregular heartbeats.
Urinalysis - This part of the test looks for underlying medical conditions, such as diabetes.
Physical Examination - During this portion of the test, the doctor will check a variety of different categories including the patient's general appearance, eyes, ears, mouth, heart, lungs, abdomen, extremities, spine, and neurological factors.

Do I Need a DOT Physical?

DOT physicals are required every 1-2 years if you:

  • Transport hazardous materials
  • Operate a vehicle that carries more than 15 people
  • Operate a vehicle with a gross combined weight of more than 10,000 lbs
  • You are paid to operate a vehicle that carries more than 8 people

Driving large commercial vehicles is a big responsibility. Not only is it a responsibility to the companies you are driving for, but you also hold responsibilities on the road to other drivers. DOT physicals ensure you are fit enough to meet the demands of your job and can operate large vehicles or vehicles with passengers without putting yourself or anyone else at risk.
